News Update -- from the Inter Alia Weblog
Is it...123?
A Dilbert cartoon from this past week made me laugh, because it's so true -- password recovery is usually pretty easy, because people choose passwords that are easy to uncover. If you're ready to ditch fluffy01, myinitials1234, or even "password" as your password, check out Bruce Schneier's Choosing Secure Passwords - Bruce discusses how it's relatively easy for someone with the right software to guess your password, and offers some good advice on how to beef up your password's security. Then head over to Roboform, a program that will create and save secure passwords for you.Blawgs of the Week
Here's yet another selection of the law-related weblogs I featured on Inter Alia this past week:
- Here's another food-borne illness blog from the folks at Marler Clark: the
Hepatitis Blog features news and legal information about Hepatitis A.- The Georgetown Law Faculty Blog features 10 professors from the Georgetown
Law School discussing issues in constitutional law, current affairs, Geneva
Conventions, international law, and much more.- Martin Buchanan is a partner at Niddrie, Fish & Buchanan, a San Diego
appellate law firm. At California Supreme Court Pending Cases he's listing
and describing all currently pending civil cases in which the California
Supreme Court has granted review, excluding those on grant and hold. Great
resource -- what would make it even better are links to the actual cases,
online -- if they're available.- Mediator Tech is from Tammy Lenski, a mediator and confessed technofile. She
helps other mediators with their mediation marketing, and use technology
more effectively in their ADR practices.
Help Desk
Here's a cool Word tip: you have created a table with lots of data, and you find you need to move some of the rows. Instead of inserting new rows and doing a cut and paste, try this -- click within the row you want to move, and press either Alt+Shift+Up or Alt+Shift+Down, depending on which direction you want to move the row. That's all there is to it!
Do you have a question about searching the Internet or your computer in general? Drop me an e-mail at tom(at)inter-alia(dot)net – I’ll post your question (don’t worry, I won’t use your real name) and try to get an answer for you!
Legally Relevant – Sites on the Internet
Diseases of the Liver
Here's a page from Columbia University's Department of Medicine -- it's an alphabetical listing of liver diseases and conditions, with links to relevant information on each. The list runs from Alagille Syndrome to Wilson Disease. You'll also find links here on current papers and books in liver disease, as well as other liver-related Internet resources.Window to My Environment
Provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, WME provides a wide range of federal, state and local information about environmental conditions and features in an area of your choice. Just plug in a city or zip code (or latitude/longitude, if you are so inclined), and you'll be taken to a map of the area with a dizzying amount of information available to you -- sites regulated by the EPA, churches, hospitals, and schools, water features, political boundaries, air and water monitors, topographic features, and more. Click on Your Environment for even more environmental data about the area.GSI Online ($$)
Global Securities Information provides securities information for legal and financial firms, beyond the data that can be found on Edgar and related resources. GSI will find any securities document for you, whether it's filed with the SEC or in some office with the California Attorney General, and it will also file securities documents for you. They'll also conduct research and find documents you won't usually find. Pricing isn't available on the site; you'll have to call to learn more.Harvard Law Review Forum
This site was set up by the Harvard Law Review to publish the responses it receives to articles published in the Review. This site is designed as an online extension of the Review's printed pages intended for a more robust scholarly discussion of the articles. Just click on All Responses to read them -- that's pretty much all there is to the site.IncSpot ($$)
The Corporation Service Company operates this site, to provide registered agent services. In addition to serving as a company's registered agent, CSC will also help manage compliance and governance requirements, name and intellectual property management, litigation and matter management, UCC and real estate services, motor vehicle services, and much more. They'll also file franchise tax reports and LP/LLC tax notices in Delaware. Lots of services here -- but as with GSI above, you'll have to contact them for information on pricing.
Finally, some fun and useful sites to start off the week:
The problem with our bookcases at home is that no one online can see them (maybe that's not such a bad thing). With Shelfari, you can create a virtual shelf and show off your book collection to the world.
Are you a Sudoku addict? Iron Sudoku features a daily puzzle, and a friendly online community to chat with or ask for help.
Well, that’s it for Issue #256 – I hope you liked it! If you did, pass this along to anyone you think might be interested, and encourage him or her to subscribe. Also, feel free to drop me an e-mail any time if you have questions, or if you have websites or other topics you want included in a future issue.
