Presentations from your Smartphone

I've never been a fan of giving PowerPoint presentations from my phone - I like more control over the program I'm using to give the presentation. However, with MightyMeeting I might just have to give it another try.

MightyMeeting has a different take on the whole "presentation by smartphone" thing: instead of loading the presentation on your phone, you upload it to the MightyMeeting server. You can then send your attendees a link to the file when you're ready to present - but it's actually a link to the presentation that you can control remotely from your phone. When you move slides on your phone, it changes on everyone else's computer. This service is designed more for presentations to remote attendees, but there's no reason why you can't use it for a live presentation, and use your phone as a remote control - you'll need an Internet connection, though.

I think MightyMeetings is great for people who frequently give the same presentation (or series of presentations), but don't necessarily want to be sitting in an office or at home in front of the computer all the time. The app is available both for iPhone and Android, or as a web app within a smartphone browser.

Is an iPad in Your Tech Future?

Well, after months and MONTHS of speculation, Apple finally unveiled its vaunted iPad tablet computing device. Does it signal a game change in the way mobile technology is designed, or is it just an oversized iPod Touch? Will lawyers use it as device for fun and games, or does it have real application for the legal profession? Those are some of the questions we tackle in the latest episode of The Kennedy-Mighell Report, entitled The iPad: Gadget or Game-Changer? We had a lot of fun in this episode, and we also briefly discussed the debut this week of WestLawNext, from Thomson Reuters. Give us a listen.

Blawg of the Day - Trade Lawyers Blog

Here's a great idea for a group blog. The Trade Lawyers Blog is a forum for well-known and respected international trade lawyers around the world to share information about international trade developments. Current contributors include Cyndee Cherniak (Canada), Susan Ross (U.S.), and Andrew Hudson (Australia). They're discussing a plethora of trade law issues, including money laundering, anti-dumping, Buy America, export controls and economic sanctions, and the WTO, among others.

Instantly PDF a Web Page

I'm a bit behind in covering this site, but it's such a great idea I wanted to mention it. PDFmyURL allows you to almost instantly create a PDF from any page on the Internet. Just type in the URL of any web page, click the button, and wham! Instant PDF of that page. There are also some advanced options that allow you to format the style of the PDF - landscape orientation, header/footer, table of contents, margins, page size, and more.

One thing I really like about this tool, and one thing I'm not wild about:

-- PDFmyURL provides a bit of code that allows you to use the tool on your own website. Just insert the code into any page on your website, and a link reading "download this page as PDF" will be created. It's a great way to provide this functionality to your readers without going to a lot of trouble.

-- On the down side, I can't see where PDFmyURL can create a PDF of an entire website. True, this can lead to extremely large, broken PDF files, but I think a PDF'd website can be very useful. If you need to create a PDF of a whole site, I'd recommend using Acrobat.

SlideFinder Helps with Your Next Presentation

I don't know about you, but sometimes I'm preparing a presentation, and I'm completely at a loss about where to begin, or where to start on a particular topic within the presentation. Surely others have done presentations on my topic before - wouldn't it be cool if I could tap into their experiences?

With SlideFinder, you can get pretty far. SlideFinder is a PowerPoint presentation search engine - it catalogs publicly available slide decks and indexes them by content. Just type in some words from your presentation, and you'll instantly see other PowerPoint presentations that include those words. Pretty slick.

Granted, you can probably just go to Google and type in "[keywords] filetype:ppt," but with SlideFinder, why bother?
