News Update -- from the Inter Alia Weblog
Rollyo Adds Cool New Tool
I've long been a fan of search tool Rollyo, which allows you to create your own "search rolls" that specifically target the web sites you want to search. Now they've gone one step better and introduced the Rollbar Bookmarklet. Just drag the link up to the Links bar of your browser. Then when you're at a site you want to search, just click on the Rollbar, enter your search terms, and Rollyo will search that particular site for your terms. This is a great tool for sites that have no search feature, or a bad search feature.Blawgs of the Week(s)
Here are some of the great law blogs I mentioned on Inter Alia the past two weeks:
- The Steinberg Law Offices of Somerset, New Jersey brings you the New Jersey Employment Law Blog, with posts on topics such as ERISA & Benefits, Non-compete Agreements, Sexual Harassment, Title VII, and more.
- For family lawyers in Utah, here's a resource for you: the Utah Divorce and Family Law Blog provides information on child support, custody, divorce, parent time, parenting plans, and other family law issues for people in Utah. It's brought to you by Gregory Stevens, a Salt Lake City lawyer.
- Stephen Rosenberg of the McCormack Firm in Boston is writing about insurance and benefits matters at the Boston ERISA & Insurance Litigation Blog. He's discussing pensions, fiduciaries, employee benefit plans, all that good stuff.
- The Florida firm of Clark Skatoff is showing off its knowledge of estate planning, probate and tax law at their site, The Law Of Death and Taxes Blog.
- The Techknowledgy Blog is brought to you by Tim Feathers and Steve Cosentino, lawyers with Stinson Morrison Hecker. They're discussing, as you might expect, issues related to technology and the law.
- Rob Leonard and Allen Trapp are criminal defense lawyers in Marietta and Carrollton, Georgia, respectively. They practices emphasizes DUI defense, and at their Georgia DUI Blog they offer "a guide for everything related to DUI in Georgia."
- McNabb Associates has yet another blog, this one the International Crimes Blog. As you might imagine, it focuses on...international crimes.
Help Desk
Here's a cell phone tip for you that I've mentioned before, but I love it so much I have to mention it again. One thing I hate is to pay $1.50 for dialing 411 on my cell phone. Google and Yahoo have figured this out, and for free. From your phone, just send a text message to 46645 (Google) or 92466 (Yahoo), along with your search terms (for example, "Tom Mighell, Dallas Texas"). In just a few seconds you'll receive a reply back with a phone number. I use Google SMS almost exclusively now as my 411.
Do you have a question about searching the Internet or your computer in general? Drop me an e-mail at tom(at)inter-alia(dot)net – I’ll post your question (don’t worry, I won’t use your real name) and try to get an answer for you!
Legally Relevant – Sites on the Internet
National Agricultural Library
The NAL houses "one of the world's largest and most accessible agricultural information collections and serves as the nexus for a national network of state land-grant and U.S. Department of Agriculture field libraries." You can search the entire library by keyword, or you can browse by subject -- these subjects include animals and livestock, education and outreach, food and nutrition, marketing and trade, plants and crops, research and technology, and more. Each topic area contains links to other sites and helpful articles, as well as links to sub-topics.Copyright and Public Domain Cheat Sheet
This is a simple yet really useful page on understanding the copyright term on both published and unpublished works. Just find the place on the chart that matches the date of the publication, and you can find out the copyright term, and any conditions that may exist with respect to republishing of the content. You can print it out in PDF if you want a permanent copy, too.DecisionQuest ($$)
DecisionQuest provides trial and jury consulting services. They will provide trial consulting and research, develop strategic communications for your case, and also create effective courtroom graphics. All this will cost you, but you can read lots of free articles contained in the litigation library, on topics like How to make Toxicology Interesting for Jurors, and Why Prospective Jurors don't Talk. Lots of helpful information in the library.Columbia University Gastroenterology Web
There's not much to this page in the way of graphics, but the resources are undeniably useful, especially if you're looking for information on digestive and liver diseases. Scroll down past the Columbia University Medical Center faculty and you'll find links on specific diseases, current papers on liver disease, and other resources on the subject.ElderWeb
This is actually more of a weblog than anything else, and it's currently undergoing a transition, according to the author. But there are some great resources here on Elder care, including Diseases, Elder Law, Finance, Housing, Insurance, Medicare, Statistics, and lots more.
Finally, this week's fun and useful sites are all about bringing the good stuff to you:
Is a loved one celebrating a birthday far away from you? Let them know you care with GoCakeGo, where you can have one of 5 cakes delivered anywhere in the US, along with plates, napkins, forks, candles, and even confetti.
Here's another great idea for those of you who find yourself inconvenienced by the new prohibition against bringing liquids on board airlines. MyWetStuff allows you to pre-order trial sizes of your favorite liquid-based toiletries and travel amenities, and have them waiting for you at your hotel when you arrive.
Well, that’s it for Issue #242 – I hope you liked it! If you did, pass this along to anyone you think might be interested, and encourage him or her to subscribe. Also, feel free to drop me an e-mail any time if you have questions, or if you have websites or other topics you want included in a future issue.
